In 1993, Jeremy Thirlby recorded four songs on his 4-track tape recorder. Whilst listening he thought they sounded rather dark and sombre and gave the project the name "Matmosphere".
The "Matmos" was the substance that a city was built on in the film Barbarella this said substance was made up from the inhabitancies evil thoughts and thrived off their devilish misdemeanours.
If you wanted to die, you could commit suicide by sacrificing yourself to the Matmos.
